🌤️ When Is the Best Time to Visit Thailand?

I get asked constantly about the weather in Koh Phi Phi and when is the best time to come for holidays.

In my opinion, Thailand is beautiful all year round, regardless of the weather. The tropical climate is unpredictable — you might get a week of sunshine in the middle of monsoon season or catch a rainy day in the so-called dry season. That’s just island life!

Still, here’s a helpful guide to what you can expect in each season across Thailand:

Thailand’s climate is tropical — think 30℃ and high humidity all year round. But it’s not the same every month! The country has three main seasons:

  • 🔥 Hot season: March to May

  • 🌧️ Rainy season: June to October

  • 🌤️ Cool season: November to February

🔥 HOT SEASON (March–April/May)

Coming to Thailand during the hot season is perfect if you’re heading to the islands and plan on spending most of your time submerged in the sea or relaxing by the pool.

April is usually the hottest month of the year, and it’s no coincidence that Thai people celebrate Songkran (Thai New Year) with a massive nationwide water fight.

So, if you can take the heat — this is your time.

☀️ Tip: I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time in big cities like Bangkok during this period unless you enjoy that sauna experience!

🌧️ RAINY SEASON (June–October)

Rainy season kicks in around early May with short daily showers, mostly at night.

Even when it rains, the temperature rarely drops below 26℃ in south of Thailand.

A common misconception is that it rains non-stop during this time — but that’s simply not true.

You’ll still get plenty of sunny days, and many travelers actually prefer visiting during this season because:

  • There are fewer tourists

  • Accommodation prices drop

  • The landscapes are lush and green

☔ From my 15 years living in Thailand, the wettest months tend to be June and September.

☀️ July and August — although Europe’s summer holidays — are usually sunny and hot here too.

🌤️ COOL SEASON (November–February)

This is Thailand’s “high season” and the most popular time to visit.

Rain usually clears up by mid-November, and there’s little to no rain from January to March.

But here’s the thing:

They call it the cool season, but trust me, there’s nothing cool about it 😅 It’s still 30℃ with full sun — perfect beach weather!

🗺️ Regional Differences

Of course, there are slight variations depending on where you go:

  • Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Pai) gets cooler in the evenings during “cool” season.

  • Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi) vs. Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) — the weather patterns shift slightly.

🔻 General rule: The further south (closer to the equator), the hotter and more humid it gets.

🌴 Koh Phi Phi Weather: A Story of Its Own

Koh Phi Phi has its own microclimate.

✅ Pro tip: Don’t even bother checking the weather forecast — it’s rarely accurate here.

The island is so small that rain showers usually come and go within minutes. Sure, during the rainy season there can be a few gloomy days or strong winds, but honestly? I can count those on two hands each year.

You could get unlucky and hit a rainy week in February, or get incredibly lucky and have a dry, sunny June. That’s just the charm of the tropics.

💛 Even if it rains, don’t let it spoil your trip — the sun always comes out again!

To answer your question — the driest months in Thailand are February and March. It’s not unusual to go days or even weeks without a single drop of rain during this time. The temperatures are high, the skies are clear, and it’s the perfect season for beach hopping, island adventures, and soaking up the sun.

If you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine, this is your safest bet! ☀️🏝️
