Discover Koh Lanta: Thailand’s Laid-Back Island Paradise

Koh Lanta is made up of two islands — Koh Lanta Yai (Big Lanta) and Koh Lanta Noi (Small Lanta) — located in Krabi province in southern Thailand. Most of the tourist action takes place on Koh Lanta Yai, while Koh Lanta Noi remains mostly rural and local.

The island is around 90 km from Krabi Airport and 120 km from Trang Airport, making it easily accessible by van and ferry.

Koh Lanta offers a beautiful mix of long sandy beaches, lush jungle, hidden waterfalls, and a peaceful island atmosphere that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of more touristy spots like Phuket or Ao Nang. Even during high season, Lanta never feels overcrowded — making it perfect for travelers seeking tranquility.

Whether you’re chasing gorgeous sunsets, craving adventure in nature, or just looking to unwind on empty, quiet beaches, Koh Lanta delivers. The island also has something for every budget — from affordable backpacker hostels and beach bungalows to luxury 5-star resorts with ocean views.

Koh Lanta Yai & Koh Lanta Noi: Two Islands, One Peaceful Escape

Koh Lanta Yai is the main island that most travelers refer to simply as Koh Lanta. It stretches about 30 km long and 6 km wide, offering plenty of space to explore without ever feeling crowded.

  • The west coast is where you’ll find the island’s famous long beaches, relaxed beach bars, and the majority of hotels and resorts.

  • The east coast is a different world — lined with mangrove forests, quiet fishing villages, and an authentic look into local island life.

Koh Lanta Noi, just across the water, is still a mystery to many visitors. It’s connected to Koh Lanta Yai by a modern bridge, making it easy to visit on a scooter or by car.

  • Like its larger neighbor, Koh Lanta Noi features remote beaches on the west and scenic fishing communities on the east, all set against beautiful panoramic backdrops.

  • It’s still mostly untouched by tourism, making it a great place to experience a slower, more traditional side of Lanta.

How to Explore Koh Lanta Like a Local

Both Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi are best explored by motorbike or bicycle. Renting a scooter gives you the freedom to discover hidden beaches, roadside viewpoints, and charming villages at your own pace.

If you’re traveling with family or prefer not to drive, you can also hire a car with a driver for the day — it’s a convenient and comfortable way to see the island without the stress.

1. Visit the Old Town

Lanta Old Town is the island’s original settlement and offers a charming glimpse into the island’s past. This peaceful village on the southeast coast is lined with traditional wooden houses, colorful lantern-style lamp posts, and quiet wooden piers reaching over the sea.

Stroll through the main street to explore souvenir shops, local boutiques, and stalls selling spices, teas, and coffee from northern Thailand. It’s a perfect place to slow down and take in the laid-back island life.

For a delicious meal with a view, head to Pinto Restaurant, perched on wooden stilts above the water — a great spot to enjoy fresh seafood with a breeze.

2. Mai Kaew Cave

Mai Kaew Cave is one of Koh Lanta’s hidden natural wonders, located right in the center of the island, at the junction between the east and west coasts. It’s easy to find thanks to clear signage, and there’s a parking area for motorbikes or cars.

To explore the cave, you’ll need to join a guided tour. The experience includes a 30-minute jungle walk, followed by around 1 hour inside the cave, and another 30-minute walk back.

The cave is filled with stalactites, narrow tunnels, and open chambers, so it’s quite the adventure! The entrance fee is 200 THB per person.

Important tip: Wear proper shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty — no flip-flops! Parts of the cave are slippery and muddy, but it’s a fantastic experience if you’re up for a little adventure.

3. Following Giants – Ethical Elephant Sanctuary

A must-do activity on Koh Lanta is visiting Following Giants, a truly authentic, sustainable, and elephant-friendly sanctuary. This place stands out for its strong ethical values — there’s no feeding, no bathing, and absolutely no riding. Instead, visitors can observe the elephants from a respectful distance as they roam freely through the forest, just as nature intended.

The sanctuary offers a peaceful and educational experience where the elephants lead the way in their natural habitat. We did the 2-hour program and absolutely loved it — it’s one of the most heartwarming experiences you can have on the island.

Klong Jark Waterfall is one of Koh Lanta’s natural gems, located on the west side of the island, just south of Tiger Cave. Look out for signs that say “Waterfall Elephant Trekking” – that’s where you’ll find the path leading into the jungle.

The walk to the waterfall is scenic and peaceful, following a creek through the forest. No guide is needed — just follow the trail, and you’ll reach the waterfall in about 30–40 minutes.

It’s a good idea to wear water shoes or sandals with grip, as the path can be slippery near the water. The waterfall isn’t huge, but it’s a refreshing and quiet spot, perfect for a little jungle adventure.

There’s a 2 km jungle trail perfect for a short hike, where you might spot monitor lizards, exotic birds, and plenty of wild monkeys. Be careful — the monkeys are bold and often try to steal food or bags. Do not feed them, as it’s strictly prohibited.

The area is well maintained and perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Entrance to the park is 200 THB per person.

Located on the eastern side of Koh Lanta, just north of the Monkey Nursery, the Mangrove Forest offers a peaceful and unique nature experience. From the car park, follow the path to the 800-meter circular boardwalk that winds through the dense mangroves.

Keep an eye out for colorful crabs of all shapes and sizes crawling in the mud — they’re everywhere! Along the riverbank, you’ll find rustic floating restaurants and a few small local fish farms, adding to the charm of the area.

For a closer look, you can rent a kayak for about 300 THB per hour and paddle through the serene mangrove channels. It’s a great way to explore this hidden side of the island.

These markets pop up in different locations around the island, usually in the afternoon every other day. You’ll find everything from delicious street food and fresh produce to clothing, souvenirs, and handmade goods — often at bargain prices.

While stalls are open throughout the day, the markets come alive after 4 PM and usually run until around 9 PM. The locations change frequently, so be sure to ask a local or check with your hotel when you arrive. Here’s the current market schedule:
